Recently, a group of farmer friends had an email discussion on the issue of going barefoot or wearing sandals in the field. I was impressed to hear pretty much every farmer who weighed in, including many folks who are in most ways your typical hippy, back-to-the-land farmer stereotypes, say that after many years farming they now require closed-toe shoes on the farm.
